Kamala Harris’ Iowa Campaign Knocks 200,000 Doors Since August

Today, Kamala Harris’ campaign in Iowa announced that organizers, volunteers, and supporters have officially knocked more than 200,000 doors across the state since August. The Harris campaign will continue to engage Iowans in face-to-face conversations on their doorsteps about Harris’ record of fighting for justice for all Americans and her plans as President to fight for economic justice, reproductive justice, and health care justice, up until the caucus on February 3rd.

“I am so proud of the hustle of our team,” said Harris Iowa Organizing Director Erin Phillips. “It’s because of their energy and enthusiasm that we’ve been able to reach so many Iowans in every part of the state and engage them in personal conversations about why justice is on the ballot in this election and how Kamala Harris will fight for all Americans. Day by day and door by door, we are continuing to grow our network of supporters, volunteers, and precinct leaders that form the heart of our campaign.”

Harris’ campaign continues to organize in every county and every precinct across the state to build up the campaign’s volunteer capacity and has invested heavily in the precinct-level organizing that is crucial for success on caucus night.

Kamala Harris’ October Hustle, Focus on Justice Give Her Iowa Organizing Edge Heading Into Liberty and Justice Dinner

Over 15 Days, Harris Has Expanded Precinct Leadership to Enter November Strong

In the month leading up to the Iowa Democratic Party’s Liberty and Justice Celebration, Senator Kamala Harris “moved to Iowa,” spending 15 days at more than 30 different events across the state -- the most Iowa activity of any Democratic candidate in October by far. Throughout the month, Harris campaigned in the state each week to engage caucusgoers personally and hear directly from Iowans about their experiences and issues that matter most to them in this election. Harris has emphasized her record of fighting for justice for all Americans, and her plans as President to fight for economic justice, reproductive justice, and health care justice, among others. As she has said across Iowa this month, justice is on the ballot in 2020.

Harris’ activity this month has also targeted the importance of the precinct-level organizing that is crucial for success on caucus night -- from personally recruiting volunteers to serve as precinct captains on caucus night, to hosting a strategy session with Women for Kamala Captains.

She has worked to meet Iowans where they are -- in their barbershops, in their living rooms, at their local farmer’s market, and more. These personal interactions have continued to shape Harris’ campaign -- from discussing how to end the epidemic of gun violence over Sunday Supper with the Grimm family in Ames, to hearing from mothers at a Mamas for Kamala playdate in Vinton about what her Children’s Agenda would mean to them.

Along the way, Harris has continued to earn new supporters -- from Cedar County Democratic Party Chair Larry Hodgden after she announced her plan to combat President Trump’s war on rural America, to Johnson County Supervisor Pat Heiden at her town hall in Iowa City. As well as hundreds of precinct captains.

Heading into November, Harris will maintain frequent travel to Iowa and keep building out her on the ground organizing in every corner of the state.

Kamala Harris Launches Innovative Iowa Campus Distributed Organizing Program to Train and Empower Students

“Students for Kamala” will participate in trainings and receive a digital campus toolkit

“Kamala Campus Captains” will serve as leaders to organize their own communities

As students start to move back to Iowa’s college and community college campuses this week, Kamala’s campaign is reigniting its campus organizing program with the “Students for Kamala” initiative. Last spring, Kamala Harris became the first presidential candidate to launch a program to organize and train students. “Students for Kamala” will help the campaign continue to build a broad coalition of Harris supporters on campus, including many first-time caucusgoers from diverse backgrounds.

Distributed organizing programs put the power in the hands of supporters, giving them the tools and training necessary to run their own programs that are tailored to the unique needs of their communities. This campus organizing program will train and give students the resources they need to be involved in the caucus process, in organizing, and in progressive causes far beyond the 2020 cycle. This includes providing the “Campus Toolkit,” a unique digital organizing tool that will allow students to access resources such as policy one-pagers, storytelling trainings, and relational organizing materials on their phones at any time.

“Students for Kamala” will begin in full force during move-in week, with Harris organizers tabling alongside student groups such as College Democrats chapters and signing students up to get involved at high-traffic at locations around campus.

Harris Iowa Campaign Chair and former Drake University student Deidre DeJear said, “I really got my start in politics through active engagement at Drake. Our campaign is going to show students that their voices matter, and that their activism for Kamala Harris can just be the start of their political involvement in Iowa. Welcome week is a great opportunity for us to get in touch with students as they are planning out their semester, and we are making informing, motivating, and mobilizing students a key priority.”

The initiative builds upon the extensive organizing program the campaign has already established in Iowa. The campaign will bring the “Kamala Captains” program it launched in the beginning of August to campuses. “Kamala Campus Captains” will be a core part of the campaign’s volunteer network and will serve as leaders and precinct captains for Harris on their campuses. It will also hold the second series of “Camp Kamala” student and youth organizing trainings, which first occurred on a number of campuses in April

In addition, the campaign will host new “Campus Caucus Trainings” tailored to inform students about the caucus process, including the new virtual caucus option. “Students for Kamala” will have individual chapters at various campuses, including “Hawkeyes for Harris,” “Bulldogs For the People,” “Cyclone Students for Kamala,” “Panthers for Harris,” among others.

This targeted investment will harness the energy and enthusiasm the campaign has seen from young people since Harris launched her campaign in February, and extends the reach of the organizing efforts that are already reaching into every county and precinct in Iowa.

Kamala Harris’ Iowa Campaign Kicks off Statewide “Weekend of Action” with Des Moines Office Opening

Harris Organizers to Host Over 40 Events Across Iowa

On Saturday, July 20, Kamala Harris’ campaign will celebrate the public opening of its Des Moines field office while organizers across Iowa kick off the campaign’s first “Weekend of Action” by hosting over 40 phone banks, canvass kick offs, and organizing events. Still building on the momentum from Harris’ first Democratic debate performance, the “Weekend of Action” will help the campaign harness supporters’ energy and introduce the campaign to potential caucusgoers around the state.

Iowa campaign chair Deidre DeJear will join organizing staff and local Harris supporters for the office opening, which will also include a back-to-school supply drive to benefit Des Moines Public Schools.

“Our team of volunteers and supporters is growing by the day, and we are so excited to have a space in Des Moines where we can welcome them,” said DeJear. “Members of the community will have a place to make phone calls, join canvass launches, and meet other Kamala supporters. This is one more way we can continue to engage Iowans who are excited about Kamala Harris’ agenda and believe she is the best candidate to take on President Donald Trump.”

With more than 65 paid staffers on the ground, almost all focused on organizing, the Harris operation is reaching into every county and precinct across Iowa. From a canvass launch in Dubuque to a phone bank in Red Oak and at many events across the state during the “Weekend of Action,” organizers and volunteers will continue to engage Iowans in conversations about why Harris is the best person to take on Donald Trump and fight for them and their families.

Kamala Harris Announces Iowa Campus Organizing Effort

Camp Kamala will allow the campaign to harness Iowa’s organizing power ahead of the summer

Today, Kamala Harris announced that her campaign in Iowa is hosting student and youth organizing trainings on college and community college campuses across the state. The training programs, called Camp Kamala, will happen from April 16 - 18 at the University of Iowa, Drake, Iowa State, Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC), and the University of Northern Iowa. Students and young people will apply to participate in the program. This effort will allow the Harris campaign to harness the organizing power of students before they head home for the summer.

“Students and young people in Iowa are going to play a critical organizing role in the caucuses. I hope you’ll join our team in April to learn more about the campaign and how to get involved,” Kamala Harris said.

“Our campaign is working to organize young Iowans who are the future of the country,” Will Dubbs, Kamala Harris Iowa State Director, said. “I am proud that we will be able to utilize the excitement around Kamala’s campaign heading into the critical summer months.”

Students and young Iowans will be invited to hear directly from the campaign about Team Kamala’s caucus organizing strategy and learn how to get involved. They will also be trained on the caucus process and sent home with the tools to organize their fellow students and communities over the summer and into the fall.

Students and young Iowans are encouraged to apply to take part in the program here: https://action.kamalaharris.org/signup/camp-kamala/. The application closes on April 13 and participants will be accepted on a rolling basis.

The Harris campaign in Iowa is organizing in every corner of the state. Earlier this month the campaign announced it has supporters in all 99 counties of Iowa.
