Seacoast Media Group Endorses Senator Amy Klobuchar

“Klobuchar is the right candidate with the right track record and temperament to begin bringing the people of our nation back together”

MANCHESTER, NH — Today, the Seacoast Media Group editorial board endorsed Senator Amy Klobuchar for the Democratic nomination for President. The Seacoast Media Group, which publishes Seacoast Online, the Portsmouth Herald, Foster’s Daily Democrat, Hampton Union, and Exeter News-Letter, cited Klobuchar’s ability to unite the country and address our most pressing issues.

The endorsement comes on the heels of endorsements from the Keene Sentinel, the New Hampshire Union Leader, the New York Times, the Quad-City Times, and the Iowa City Press-Citizen. With the Seacoast Media Group, New Hampshire Union Leader, and The Keene Sentinel endorsements, Klobuchar has the support of the editorial boards of three of the largest papers in New Hampshire.

Seacoast Media Group -- Our endorsement: Amy Klobuchar can unite America

On Feb. 10, 2019, U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar stood, covered in snow, on an island in the middle of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis and announced her candidacy for president.

She chose the location carefully.

The Mississippi River runs through Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana, the lifeblood of America’s heartland.

“The Mississippi River, all our rivers, connect us to one another, to our shared story,” Klobuchar said. “For that is how this country was founded, with patriots who saw more that united them than divided them.”

Klobuchar launched her campaign in America’s heartland, and that is where she has charted her course in the Democratic presidential primary. Seacoast Media Group’s editorial board believes Klobuchar has set the right course in her campaign and would set the right course for our nation if elected president.

After a lengthy interview process shaped by questions from our readers, the editorial board is proud to endorse Klobuchar in New Hampshire’s Democratic Primary.

Our bipartisan editorial board is comprised of the papers’ editors and community advisers balanced among Democrats, Republicans and independents. We believe Klobuchar’s moderate positions will be attractive to right-leaning independents and disaffected Republicans looking for an alternative to President Donald Trump. This will be an advantage in the general election. America needs a healing voice with a willingness to take a bipartisan approach on major issues.

Klobuchar’s answers to our readers’ broad range of questions, coupled with her effectiveness over three terms in the U.S. Senate, give us confidence she is the best candidate to begin to unite the American people after the turbulent Trump presidency.

“If you’re tired of the noise and the nonsense and the extremes in our politics, you have a home with me,” Klobuchar said in a video call with our board on Jan. 23, the third day of President Trump’s impeachment trial in the Senate.

Klobuchar doesn’t try to impress with soaring rhetoric or by insulting her rivals.

“I believe that courage isn’t just standing by yourself giving a speech,” Klobuchar said. “Courage is whether you’re willing to stand next to someone you don’t always agree with for the betterment of the country. And you can see that’s how I’ve governed. Every bill I’ve passed has been bipartisan. I have a record of working across the aisle, the highest of anyone running for president.”

While Democrats mock President Trump for whoppers like Mexico paying to build the wall, many of the Democratic presidential candidates have made similarly unrealistic promises. Klobuchar doesn’t make promises she can’t keep.

“I am the best Democrat in the race because I come with receipts,” she said. “I just don’t have the talking points, I have the actual proof points. And for me that means the number one thing that unites our party right now is that we want to win and we want to win big, and if you want to do that, you’ve got to bring people with you. You have to bring independents and moderate Republicans.”

Klobuchar wants to take a practical approach to addressing the nation’s health care costs and coverage by improving upon the Affordable Care Act and lowering prescription drug prices.

Klobuchar is not promising “Medicare for All,” which could potentially move more than 140 million Americans from private to public health insurance, a concept that lacks unanimous Democratic support and has virtually no Republican support. Rather, Klobuchar wants to build on the strengths of the ACA, which has proven resilient under relentless Republican attacks because of its popular protections for those with preexisting conditions, for allowing children to stay on their parents’ insurance until they are 26, and for rewarding quality outcomes rather than volume of services. She plans to help drive down prices by adding a public option for health insurance.

Klobuchar supports the now popular notion that Medicare should be able to negotiate prescription drug prices on behalf of the millions of seniors it serves, as well as allowing consumers to buy less expensive drugs from other countries, indexing U.S. drug prices to the international market and stopping drug companies from paying their competitors to not bring generic drugs to market.

Beyond instituting policies to curb health care costs, Klobuchar believes in paying for new initiatives and investments, too. She said candidates should show “how you’re going to pay for every single thing that you propose and do it in a real way, not a pie-in-the-sky way.” And she provided our editorial board with a detailed plan on how she’ll fund her ambitious agenda.

With the nation’s debt now in excess of $23 trillion and trillion dollar annual budget deficits projected every year into the future for the first time in our country’s history, the concept of candidates proposing ways to offset the costs of their policy initiatives was a requirement for any endorsement.

But Klobuchar took it a step further, expressing a willingness not only to pay for new proposals but to address existing fiscal issues, too. She is one of the only candidates to highlight the debt and deficit on her website for public consideration. Her plans also involve creating a deficit reduction fund and the goals of lowering the debt-to-GDP ratio by the end of her first term and putting our country on a sustainable fiscal path. She realizes the nation’s debt comes with a cost and burdens future generations, that taxpayers are not a bottomless piggy bank and the treasury is not a boundless money tree.

“Donald Trump has been treating the people of this country like poker chips in one of his bankrupt casinos,” she said.

Deaths of despair, which are increasing in our country because of addiction and suicide, are not an abstract concept to Klobuchar. “For me it’s personal,” she said. “My dad struggled with alcoholism my whole life growing up. By the time I got married my dad had his third DWI and they said, ‘That’s it, you’ve got to choose jail or treatment,’ and he chose treatment and in his words, it saved his life. He was pursued by grace because of his faith, family and the treatment he got.”

On climate change, Klobuchar offers a clear plan of action beginning with rejoining the rest of the world in the Paris Agreement, protecting fuel efficiency standards and putting a price on carbon emissions which, she said, “is the only way to create the incentive to get the big investment in technology that we’re going to need to take this on.” At the same time, Klobuchar stated explicitly that she will not leave behind workers in the fossil fuel industries and that money raised from pricing carbon should be reflected in lower heating and cooling bills for American consumers.

The challenges our nation faces are daunting to say the least, and we can’t fight climate change, a dysfunctional and economically abusive health care system, and soaring debt and deficits while fighting each other. In our view, Klobuchar is the right candidate with the right track record and temperament to begin bringing the people of our nation back together.

“I don’t think people are looking for the richest candidate,” Klobuchar said. “They’ve already got a guy who boasts all the time about how rich he is in the White House. They’re not looking for the loudest candidate in the room or the most extreme. I think they want something very different than Donald Trump and I am that person.”

We encourage our readers to vote for Minnesota U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar in the Feb. 11 Democratic primary.

Mayor of Laconia Andrew Hosmer Endorses Senator Amy Klobuchar

Hosmer Cites Klobuchar’s Ability to Win, Economic Agenda in Endorsement

Hosmer Is Latest Mayor of Obama-Trump New Hampshire City To Throw Support Behind Klobuchar

MANCHESTER, NH — As Senator Amy Klobuchar continues to build momentum in the Granite State, newly elected Laconia Mayor Andrew Hosmer announced his endorsement of her campaign for President. Laconia voted for Barack Obama twice before backing Donald Trump in 2016.

"Senator Klobuchar is the best option Democrats have to beat President Trump. She knows how to win in places Democrats need to win,” said Mayor of Laconia Andrew Hosmer. “Her economic revitalization agenda for America is just what cities like Laconia need. Amy's record of bipartisan accomplishments is proof she has the skills necessary to bring voters of all backgrounds to the table. At a time when our country is deeply divided, Amy's ability to listen and work with people regardless of where they come from, is critical if America is to begin healing.  Even though New Hampshire and Minnesota are 1000 miles apart, we share the values of hard work, self-reliance, and commitment to our fellow citizens. Amy embodies these values and I'm proud to endorse her."

Hosmer is the latest municipal leader from an Obama-Trump city in New Hampshire to throw their support behind Klobuchar. In November, Rochester Mayor Caroline McCarley also endorsed Klobuchar, citing her ability to bring together a winning coalition.

Responding to Hosmer’s endorsement, McCarley said, “I’m so glad my fellow mayor Andrew Hosmer has joined Team Amy. As mayors of cities that voted for both Obama and Trump, we know what it takes to win in places Democrats might not typically win. I know Amy has what it takes to bring a broad coalition of people together not only to beat Trump, but to win big up and down the ballot.”

Klobuchar has continued to earn new endorsements from across the Granite State, including State Representative and community leader Latha Mangipudi in Nashua, Deputy Speaker of the House Karen Ebel in New London, and former Mayor Jack Blalock in Portsmouth. On Saturday, she was endorsed by the only statewide newspaper in New Hampshire, the Union Leader.

The Keene Sentinel Endorses Senator Amy Klobuchar

“What sets Klobuchar apart is her combination of experience and approach… Her record in Washington is one of getting things done”

MANCHESTER, NH —Today, the Keene Sentinel editorial board endorsed Senator Amy Klobuchar for the Democratic nomination for President. The Sentinel, which serves as a paper of record in western New Hampshire, cited Klobuchar’s commitment to progress and ability to unite people as key reasons for their endorsement.

Their endorsement comes on the heels of the endorsement of the Union Leader, the New York Times, and the Quad City Times. With the Union Leader and Keene Sentinel endorsements, Klobuchar has the support of the editorial boards of two of the largest papers in New Hampshire.

Keene Sentinel -- OPINION: Amy Klobuchar is the Democrats' best choice to move the nation forward

The state’s first-in-the-nation presidential primary is just two weeks away, and over the past year — in several cases longer — would-be Democratic nominees have criss-crossed the state, announcing plans, shaking hands and trying to separate themselves from a packed field. Some have dropped out. Some were, for various reasons, never seriously considered. More than a handful remain.

As The Sentinel’s editorial board set about trying to winnow this field, we first asked ourselves: What is our goal? Do we want to recommend the candidate we think has the best chance of winning in November? One common line of thinking among Democrats is, after all, that the single most important task at hand is to defeat Donald Trump, and little else matters. Our take is that while having a realistic chance of winning is an obvious need, there are multiple candidates who, if nominated, could win, depending on how well they campaign and how eager voters are for change.

The nation would not be well-served by focusing only on turning back the clock and not addressing what led many voters to be so disenchanted in the last election.

We therefore turned to this simple question: Who would, if elected, make the best leader of the nation? As one might imagine, while the question is simple, the answer is rather involved.

The Democratic field is filled with candidates who have much to offer. Some are big on ideas, others on details. Some offer a fresh view, others a history of service and experience. There are very progressive choices and more moderate ones, and even within those categories, some clear divisions. In interviews with a number of them, we were impressed in a variety of ways; sometimes by the depth of ideas that had previously seemed mere concepts; sometimes by the candidates’ command and knowledge of a wide variety of key issues. There were, too, cases where upon delving past the sound bites, we found less substance than we’d have hoped for. Videos of all our interviews can be viewed at SentinelSource.com/politics/election_2020, and we encourage readers to view them in coming to their own conclusions.

Our criteria — and mind you, even with a raft of research, conclusions on such often came down to impressions as much as cold, hard facts — included, for lack of a better term, leadership: Can this candidate capture the attention of voters and command a nation? We also considered their platforms and proposals, with two goals. First, would their ideas make our nation stronger, move the needle for the vast swath of Americans whose discontent was so apparent in 2016 and continues today? Second, are those plans achievable? Do we think that person could get at least some movement on their key proposals even if they don’t have a like-minded Congress?

Our nation is divided to an extent it hasn’t been in 150 years. Many Americans face the same difficulties, but see totally different directions required to solve those problems. So the last of our criteria was: Does the candidate have a blend of experience and temperament to help bridge that divide, rather than widening it? Would they work toward the policies they advocate by seeking compromise and reaching out, rather than by becoming entrenched and furthering our political differences?

The candidate we felt best meets all those criteria is Amy Klobuchar.

The senior senator from Minnesota and former county attorney’s platform is not based on revolutionary ideas, but on achievable ones. Klobuchar is, in that way, a true moderate in these times. Whip-smart and knowledgeable, she’s set on progress, but tempered by the political realities a new president would face. Her record in Washington is one of getting things done, even when that requires reaching out to her GOP counterparts. Most candidates say they can “reach across the aisle” and “bring people to the table.” She’s done it.

Asked what, if any, responsibility the government has to address income inequality, Klobuchar posited two plans: First, ensure there’s a safety net for those who need it; second, provide the opportunity for people to improve their economic standing. Toward that end she favors increasing the federal minimum wage and initiatives such as paid family leave and subsidies to make housing more affordable. She has plans targeted to assist seniors and to combat drug and alcohol addiction and improve mental health care.

On health care, she touts strengthening and building on the Affordable Care Act, protecting those with preexisting conditions and adding a public option that would help reach everyone. Through reinsurance and other cost savings, she hopes to lower premium costs, and would work to make prescriptions more affordable. Her plans aren’t the most far-reaching, but seem, to us, important steps that can be realized without adding trillions of dollars in revenue or piling up the nation’s dangerous debt-load further.

Klobuchar’s most far-reaching plans, perhaps, are those meant to address our aging infrastructure and climate change. Asked what her biggest hope is for change in the next four years, she listed climate as her top priority.

Again, there are several well-qualified candidates in this race. What sets Klobuchar apart is her combination of experience and approach. Her record of getting things done without dividing is crucial to our nation at this point. Make no mistake; the former prosecutor for Minnesota’s largest county can be tough as nails, as she demonstrated during the nomination hearing on Justice Brett Kavanaugh. But she also knows business is business and tearing down bridges is no way forward.

Forward is where our country needs to be heading. And, in these extremely divided times, we feel Amy Klobuchar is best suited among the Democratic field to get us there.

New Hampshire Union Leader Editorial: Amy Klobuchar Can Win

If you are a New Hampshire voter who thinks Donald Trump is doing a good job, you can probably sleep in on primary day, Feb. 11. Try as they might, his Republican challengers have not made a dent in the President’s popularity within the party here.

If you are an independent or Democrat, however, yours may be one of the most consequential votes ever cast in a New Hampshire Primary. If there is to be any realistic challenge to Trump in November, the Democratic nominee needs to have a proven and substantial record of accomplishment across party lines, an ability to unite rather than divide, and the strength and stamina to go toe-to-toe with the Tweeter-in-Chief.

That would be U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota. She is sharp and witty, with a commanding understanding of both history and the inner workings of Capitol Hill.

Trump doesn’t want to face her. He is hoping for Bernie, Biden, Buttigieg or Warren. Each has weaknesses, whether of age, inexperience or a far-left agenda that thrills some liberals but is ripe for exploitation in a mainstream general election.

Sen. Klobuchar has none of those weaknesses and the incumbent needs to be presented a challenger who is not easily dismissed. Her work in Washington has led to the passage of an impressive number of substantive bills, even as the partisan divide has deepened. In 2018 she won reelection, taking back dozens of conservative-leaning counties that had gone for Trump two years earlier, when Hillary Clinton barely beat him in Minnesota. In fact, Sen. Klobuchar, a former prosecutor, has never lost an election.

But can a woman be elected President? We say of course, the right woman can and should be. By choosing Amy Klobuchar, New Hampshire primary voters can go a long way to proving it.

Seasoned Activist Debby Butler Endorses Amy Klobuchar for President

Longtime New Hampshire Leader Backs Klobuchar Because of Her Integrity, Record of Public Service

MANCHESTER, NH —As Senator Amy Klobuchar continues to gain momentum in the Granite State, community leader and former Obama, Clinton, and Governor Lynch campaign official Debby Butler is throwing her support behind Klobuchar’s presidential campaign.

“I’ve been around New Hampshire politics long enough to know how to spot a candidate with the grit, smarts, and pragmatism needed to win. Amy Klobuchar is the real deal,” said prominent New Hampshire activist Debby Butler. “She has been a leader in fighting for working families her entire career. She’s also a uniter, and someone that brings everyone to the table. That’s the kind of woman we need not only to beat Donald Trump, but to win big up and down the ballot in 2020.”

Butlers’ endorsement comes shortly after Klobuchar hit 10% in an Emerson New Hampshire poll. Butler joins former State Senator Iris Estabrook, Deputy Speaker of the New Hampshire House Karen Ebel, former State Representative Jim Vershueren, former Portsmouth Mayor Jack Blalock, Rochester Deputy Mayor Elaine Lauterborn, and activists Bill Barry and John Rist in endorsing Senator Klobuchar in this month.

Seacoast Leaders Applaud Klobuchar’s Effectiveness, Ability to Build Broad Coalitions

MANCHESTER, NH — As Senator Amy Klobuchar continues to gain momentum in New Hampshire, former Portsmouth Mayor Jack Blalock and Deputy Mayor of Rochester Elaine Lauterborn today announced that they are endorsing her campaign for President. Blalock and Lauterborn, two key Seacoast municipal leaders, cited Klobuchar’s track record of passing legislation and her ability to assemble a broad coalition to beat Donald Trump as reasons for their support.

“Senator Klobuchar has a unique ability to unite constituencies for a common cause and get things done for the American people, and that’s why I am supporting her for President,” said former Portsmouth Mayor Jack Blalock. “As they say in local politics, there’s no Democratic or Republican way to fix a pothole, you just need to find a way to get it done. Senator Klobuchar has embodied that passion for results throughout her work in the United States Senate — that’s how she’s passed over 100 bills as lead Democrat. She also has proven she can win with civility in tough places and is by far the best candidate we have to not only beat Trump, but help Democrats up and down the ballot.”

“Throughout her career, Amy has led by bringing people together,” said Deputy Mayor of Rochester Elaine Lauterborn. “We need to build as big a coalition as possible to win in November. Amy has shown she can win in blue towns, red towns, and every hue in between. She’ll be a president for all of America, not just some of America, and that broad appeal can win in 2020.”

Blalock and Lauterborn’s endorsements come on the heels of Klobuchar hitting 10% in an Emerson New Hampshire poll. Mayor Blalock and Deputy Mayor Lauterborn join former State Senator Iris Estabrook, Deputy Speaker of the New Hampshire House Karen Ebel, former State Representative Jim Vershueren, and activists Bill Barry and John Rist in endorsing Senator Klobuchar in the past week. Amy For America recently held a “Win Big” Weekend of Action that included 26 canvasses across the Granite State.

MSNBC: Two New Hampshire state reps switch their support to Amy Klobuchar

By Amanda Golden | January 16, 2020

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar expanded her support base in the Granite State on Thursday when she picked up endorsements from two state representatives who previously supported Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker respectively.

State Rep. Michael Pedersen had announced his support for Warren in November and State Rep. Linn Opderbecke supported Booker before the New Jersey senator ended his presidential campaign earlier this week.

In an uncommon move of switching public endorsements, especially while both candidates are still in the race, Pedersen said in an interview with NBC News that the primary reason he's switching his support to Klobuchar is due to electability.

“I like both candidates a lot, and am friends with staff on both teams, however I think that Sen. Klobuchar is more electable across the country than Sen. Warren,” Pedersen said. “She has a proven track record of winning in Trump country. And Sen. Warren has a proven track record of winning in liberal northeast.”

Pedersen said that his support had been evolving for the last couple of weeks, but solidified behind Klobuchar after Tuesday night's Democratic debate.

“After the debate, I saw everybody pairing up — Sen. Warren and Sanders competition against one another, and then everyone else. I just think those two as a team, Sanders and Warren, they don’t appeal widely across the nation as Sen. Klobuchar.”

Pedersen said that he plans to knock on doors for Klobuchar in the remaining weeks until the New Hampshire primary.

Prior to Booker ending his presidential campaign, Pedersen also thought he was a strong candidate and noted that Booker's supporters may now turn to candidates like Klobuchar — a sentiment echoed by Opderbecke.

“Amy showed on the debate stage that she’s someone who tells the truth and has people’s backs,” Opderbecke said in a statement. “That is the leadership we need to take on Donald Trump. Amy will not only beat Trump, but also will secure victories up and down the ballot. I’m proud to support her campaign for president.”

In the last week, Klobuchar also picked up endorsements from N.H. state Rep. Jim Verschueren, former state Sen. Iris Estabrook and Deputy Speaker of the N.H. House Karen Ebel.

Senator Klobuchar Announces Endorsement of Former Three-Term State Senator Iris Estabrook

Citing Her History of Standing up for Women’s Rights, Former Three-Term State Senator Iris Estabrook Joins Over 100 Granite State Women in Endorsing Klobuchar

MANCHESTER, NH — Following a week of women-to-women organizing events in New Hampshire, Amy for America is announcing the endorsement of former three-term State Senator Iris Estabrook.

“Amy Klobuchar has been an effective advocate and leader, beginning even before she held political office when she worked to pass a bill that ensured mothers could stay in the hospital for 48 hours after they had given birth. That bill, like much of the legislation Senator Klobuchar has fought for, was passed into law, because Senator Klobuchar doesn’t just talk about helping women and Americans of all backgrounds, she gets it done,” said former State Senator Iris Estabrook.

“Senator Klobuchar has a proven track record of accomplishments and the skills to bring people together to make progress on the many challenges we face. Amy also has the fighting spirit that will be needed to take the White House back and that’s a winning combination we need at the top of the ticket in November,” Estabrook concluded.

After the birth of her daughter, Senator Klobuchar was kicked out of the hospital after just 24 hours because of an insurance company rule even though her newborn, Abigail, was in intensive care for serious birth complications. Senator Klobuchar, then a private citizen, advocated for a law to guarantee that insurance companies cover 48-hour maternal care. The bill was passed by the Minnesota State Legislature.

Former State Senator Iris Estabrook represented District 21 from 2002 to 2008. She served as chair of the Senate Education and Senate Health and Human Services Committees and as Senate Vice President for Policy. Prior to her work in the Senate, she was a three-term State Representative from Durham. She is the former director of the U.N.H. Child Care Resource and Referral office and serves on the New Hampshire Women’s Foundation Grants Committee and the Planned Parenthood New Hampshire Action Fund Board.

Senator Estabrook joins over 100 Granite State women leaders who have endorsed Senator Klobuchar, including Executive Councilor Debora Pignatelli, State Senator Jeanne Dietsch, New Hampshire House Speaker Pro Tempore Lucy Weber, former State Senator Amanda Merrill, Rochester Mayor Caroline McCarley, State Representatives Heidi Hamer of Manchester, Sandy Keans of Rochester and Polly Campion of Etna, and former state Representatives Ricia McMahon of Sutton, Rebecca Hutchinson of Deerfield, Marcia Hammon of Whitefield, Sue Gottling of Sunapee, and Evalyn Merrick of Lancaster. Last week, Amy For America held four Women-to-Women organizing events in Keene, Portsmouth, Manchester, and Nashua.

ICYMI: Klobuchar Endorsed by Former New Hampshire State Senator Peter Burling

MANCHESTER, NH — Shortly after her 14th visit to the Granite State last weekend, Amy Klobuchar today announced the endorsement of former fifth district State Senator, former New Hampshire House Democratic Leader, and former DNC member Peter Burling. Inspired by her message of bridging our country’s divides and serving as president for all of America, Senator Burling placed his support behind Amy.

WMUR: Democratic activist, former legislative leader Burling endorses Klobuchar
  • Burling, who hosted several candidates at his home in Cornish throughout the year, told New Hampshire Primary Source on Wednesday that Klobuchar resonates with him as a candidate with a genuine message of unifying the nation.
  • Burling said he was struck by her message – reflected in her television ad – that she “wants to be the president of all Americans. And as events have transpired in the past month, she’s touched a ‘Lincoln-esque’ chord.”
  • The Klobuchar campaign said Burling is the 15th public New Hampshire endorsement for Klobuchar. Among those he joins are Executive Councilor Debora Pignatelli, former Attorney General Joe Foster and former state Rep. Ricia McMahon.

Upper Valley News: Burling Backs Klobuchar
  • Burling, who has been hosting candidates at house parties at his Cornish home, said he is convinced Klobuchar can win the presidency, and he noted that the former Minnesota prosecutor has never lost an election, including three for the U.S. Senate.
  • Burling noted that Klobuchar has “the most productive record” in the United States Senate, having seen more than 100 of her bills become law, even in a partisan Washington. “She gets it done,” Burling said.
  • Klobuchar also has an intellectual and “political pragmatism” that could help the country, said Burling, who also served as Democratic leader in the New Hampshire House. “Mostly she wants to bring us back together again,” he said. “There certainly is no other achievement as important as doing that.”
