NEWS: Rep. Mark Takano Endorses Bernie Sanders for President

WASHINGTON – Rep. Mark Takano, Chair of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, Vice-Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Co-Chair of the LGBT Equality Caucus and Second Vice Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, on Tuesday endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders for president.

“I’ve always admired Bernie Sanders for the courageous leadership that he has displayed over his life in Congress,” said Rep. Takano. “I think about him standing up against the Defense of Marriage Act. Very few members of Congress actually stood up for marriage equality in the 1990s. I think he’s got the clearest history of protecting Medicare and Social Security.”

"I’m proud that Rep. Takano is supporting our movement," Sanders said. "Mark Takano has done phenomenal work standing up for our veterans and working families. With Mark’s help we will continue to build our multiracial, multigenerational movement that will defeat Trump in November.”

In a video released today, Takano details how Sanders’ policies will help working families across America, and Sanders’ long record of getting this done in the Senate.

“Bernie has got a vision, he's got an agenda, and Bernie has the skillset to get things done,” said Rep. Takano.

NEWS: Bernie 2020 Rolls Out Massive New List of California Endorsements

41 elected officials, more than 500 teachers, 28 farmers, 58 veterans, and 112 community leaders throw their support behind Sen. Sanders

CALIFORNIA – On the heels of a new poll that shows Sen. Bernie Sanders taking a commanding lead in the California primary, 41 elected officials, more than 500 teachers, 28 farmers, 58 veterans, and more than 100 community leaders in the Golden State announced their support behind Sen. Sanders’ candidacy for President of the United States, demonstrating the growing momentum of the Bernie 2020 campaign in California.

Today's endorsements are in addition to 126 earlier endorsements from elected leaders, more than 80 community leaders, more than 200 academics, the grassroots network Bay Area Rising, the entire City Council of Coachella, four major labor endorsements from National Nurses United, UPTE-CWA 9119,United Teachers Los Angeles, and UNITE HERE Local 11, and a statewide endorsement from the California Young Democrats.

“I’ve been involved in the Democratic Party and presidential campaigns for over 15 years — I believe strongly that Senator Sanders is the best candidate to go up against Trump, and to take on the most urgent, devastating challenge facing the district I represent and our entire country: economic inequality,” said San Francisco County Supervisor Matt Haney. “I will be proud to cast my vote for him in the March primary.”

"The Victor Valley needs change — new ideas, new leadership, new ways of living. Senator Bernie Sanders' commitment to new infrastructure in his Green New Deal plan, his commitment to cannabis legalization and a just and equitable industry, and the signature commitments the Medicare for All and free public higher education are the game changers that Adelanto and the Victor Valley need,” said Adelanto City Councilmember Stevevonna Evans. “I'm proud to be one of the first elected officials in the High Desert to endorse Bernie, and I encourage my colleagues and neighbors to do the same."

"As a proud immigrant, long-time union leader, and advocate for women’s rights, civil rights, and environmental justice, I have a moral responsibility to support the candidate whose values align with mine,” said Ada Briceño, Co-President of Unite Here 11 and Chair of the Democratic Party of Orange County. “That candidate is Bernie Sanders. Bernie has stood with workers and unions for his entire political career — on the picket line and the floor of the Senate. He is the only candidate I trust to fight for us in the White House, and the only person I trust to ensure that workers' rights are prioritized."

“Ground Game LA has endorsed the only candidate for President who represents a chance to truly transform government and policy in this country, and that candidate is Sen. Bernie Sanders,” said Treasurer and Co-Founder of Ground Game LA Daisy Vega. “Ground Game LA is committed to developing community leaders and building community power. Grassroots leaders from low-income communities worked together to imagine a world where we could have a Homes Guarantee, a Green New Deal, and Medicare for All. We have endorsed the one candidate who doesn't explain why our communities can't have what we need, but instead stands with us and will fight alongside us to bring true justice to our country."

NEWS: UPTE-CWA 9119, the Nation’s Largest CWA Local, Endorses Bernie Sanders for President

CALIFORNIA – University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE)-CWA 9119, the nation’s largest Communication Workers of America (CWA) local representing nearly 17,000 employees across the University of California (UC) system, today endorsed Senator Bernie Sanders for president following an all-member voting process. Sanders carried the election with 66% of the vote.

Sanders has long been the candidate of the working class and organized labor, recently refusing to cross the picket line for the December Democratic debate in Los Angeles, speaking at a strike action with UPTE-CWA 9119 last year, and standing with unions across the country in their struggle for fair wages and a fair contract.

“I’m honored to receive UPTE-CWA 9119’s support today,” said Sanders. “The labor movement helped build the middle class in this country, and strong unions are key to reviving it today. As president, I’ll continue to stand on the side of workers and unions like UPTE-CWA 9119 in the fight for a fair and just economy that works for all of us.”

The decision comes at a critical time for UPTE-CWA Local 9119 as the union reached a new contract agreement after years of negotiations with UC executives for critical salary increases and protections on health-care premiums and overtime pay.

“Senator Sanders has fought for labor for decades and empowers workers to fight for what is just and deserved,” said UPTE-CWA 9119 President Jamie McDole. “He fights shoulder to shoulder with workers on the picket lines, and stood with our UPTE members when we struck last year. He stands against privatization of education, and as a union that represents nearly 17,000 higher education employees and educators on 13 public university and community college campuses, the fight is a reality for us. It’s time for a candidate who puts people first. I am proud of my members for standing up and endorsing Senator Sanders today.”

Originally formed in 1990 by a group of employees who believed that UC workers would benefit from a union to safeguard and expand workers rights, in 1993, UPTE members voted to affiliate with the Communications Workers of America, a 700,000-member union in the AFL-CIO. Today, the union represents workers across the UC system, Department of Energy labs, and three community colleges--including museum scientists, IT workers, social workers, researchers and health care workers.

Today’s endorsement follows those from other major labor groups including the United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA), National Nurses United (NNU), SEA/SEIU 1984, New Hampshire American Postal Workers (NH APWU), United Electrical, Radio, & Machine Workers of America (UE), and National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW).

A strong, unwavering advocate for unions across all sectors, Sanders has the most thorough and extensive plan of any presidential hopeful to strengthen rights for American workers and the labor movement, laid out in his Workplace Democracy Plan.

NEWS: Bernie 2020 Rolls Out Massive List of California Endorsements Ahead of Los Angeles Rally

40 elected officials, more than 80 community leaders, and more than 200 academics throw their support behind Sen. Sanders

CALIFORNIA – Ahead of Sen. Sanders’ rally in Los Angeles with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez today, 40 elected officials, more than 80 community leaders, and more than 200 academics in the Golden State announce their support behind Sen. Sanders’ candidacy for President of the United States, demonstrating the growing momentum of the Bernie 2020 campaign in California.

The endorsements are in addition to 86 earlier endorsements from elected leaders, two major labor endorsements from National Nurses United and United Teachers Los Angeles, the grassroots network Bay Area Rising, the entire City Council of Coachella, and a statewide endorsement from the California Young Democrats.

"Having fought for the rights and dignity of working immigrant women for two decades, I trust Bernie Sanders to be a champion for justice for all of us,” said Oakland City Councilmember Nikki Bas. “Our nation needs a bold, principled leader who will end status quo politics and put the needs of everyday people before corporate profits. We must build a massive movement to win national rent control, deep investments in affordable housing, Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, immigration reform, and just alternatives to mass incarceration. I’m endorsing Bernie Sanders because he is building a movement to create a country that cares for all our families."

“Bernie Sanders is the child of immigrants - people who worked hard and who struggled to make a life in this country,” said Los Angeles City Councilmember Gil Cedillo. “That is where he comes from, that is who he is. Bernie Sanders has been explicitly articulating every single thing that we have been fighting for our entire lives. I still stand behind my words that not since the Rainbow Coalition of 1988 have we seen such a diverse and progressive movement for the heart and soul of the Democratic Party under the leadership of Bernie Sanders. Our nation needs a revolutionary movement and there is no other viable candidate to carry out our agenda backed by our core values. I stood with Bernie in 2016, and I am even more proud to stand with him today, and endorse his candidacy as the next President of the United States."

"We need a president who is committed to caring for the people of this country--from the men and women who bravely wore our nation's uniform to the young people who are sleeping on our streets," said Will Rodriguez-Kennedy, President of the California Young Democrats. "Bernie Sanders has always fulfilled our moral obligation to lift up all Americans and give them the opportunities they deserve to thrive."

“Bernie Sanders’ prophetic call to love and compassion is finding an answering cry for justice, especially among those who have suffered too hard for too long,” said Anna Harrison, Associate Professor of Theological Studies at Loyola Marymount University. “His clarion cry, 'Not me. Us,' is our best hope for the future."

“We are proud to have the endorsement of some of California’s most progressive and dedicated elected officials, community leaders, and academics,” said Rafael Návar, Bernie 2020 California State Director. “We have the grassroots support we need to win this election, and with these leaders on our side, Bernie Sanders will become the next President of the United States.”

NEWS: Ahead of Trip to the Golden State, Bernie 2020 Rolls Out Slate of New California Endorsements

CALIFORNIA -- Ahead of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ trip to California, 36 elected officials announced their support for his candidacy for President of the United States. The endorsements are in addition to nearly 50 California endorsements that were announced last month, and two major labor endorsements this week from National Nurses United and United Teachers Los Angeles . Sen. Sanders will arrive in California this morning for a three-day swing through Oakland, Fresno, Long Beach, and East Los Angeles.

“We are proud to have the endorsement of some of California’s most progressive and dedicated elected officials and party leaders,” said Rafael Návar, Bernie 2020 California State Director. “We have the grassroots support we need to win this election, and with these leaders on our side, Bernie Sanders will become the next President of the United States.”

The new endorsements include two from members of the California State Assembly, and the District Attorney-elect of San Francisco.

“In a country with our resources, it is unconscionable that children are dying because they don't have adequate health insurance, living on our streets because their parents can't earn enough to make ends meet on a minimum wage, or going hungry because we don't have a universal school lunch program,” said California State Assemblymember Kansen Chu. “Bernie Sanders is the only candidate in this race who has spent his career fighting for universal child care and early education for all Americans; I trust him to rebuild the social safety net in this country and deliver the programs that children need to grow up healthy, safe, smart, and strong.”

“Bernie Sanders fights with and for working people--and he always has,” said California State Assemblymember Ash Kalra. “When we elect him as President of the United States, he will strengthen the middle class, restore workers rights, and guarantee a federal minimum wage that will actually pay the bills. With his leadership, we can finally put an end to exploitative work practices and corporate greed that have decimated hard working American families, and reverse the 40-year decline of the middle class.”

The full slate of endorsements includes:
  • Jonathan Abboud, Trustee, Santa Barbara City College, Santa Barbara
  • Victor Aguilar, Jr., Council Member, San Leandro

ICYMI: Sanders Lands Endorsement from Unions, Progressive Group, Elected Officials and Young Democrats

WASHINGTON – Sen. Bernie Sanders this week landed the endorsements of several unions and influential groups across the country.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Sanders received the coveted endorsement from National Nurses United, the largest organization of nurses in America. The Nurses cited Sanders deep commitment to rebuilding the labor movement and his long time leadership in the fight to win Medicare for All as a major reason for their endorsement.

On Thursday evening, the United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA), the second-largest teachers’ local in the country, overwhelmingly voted to back Sanders. Sanders received over 80% of the vote, capping the most comprehensive member engagement process that UTLA has ever conducted for a political candidate.

Moments before Sanders arrived in California for his swing through the state on Friday, 36 California elected officials announced their support for his candidacy for President of the United States. The endorsements are in addition to nearly 50 California endorsements that were announced last month.

The endorsements continued to roll in on Saturday when it was announced that the progressive group, Rights & Democracy voted to endorse Sanders at their annual Membership Assembly and People Power Summit.

Late on Saturday night at the California Democratic Party Fall Convention, the California Young Democrats voted to endorse Sanders. He received over 66% of the vote.

The endorsements represent the vibrant and growing grassroots support that Sanders’ campaign is receiving from coast to coast.

UTLA Overwhelmingly Endorses Sen. Bernie Sanders for US President

LOS ANGELES — United Teachers Los Angeles, the second-largest teachers’ local in the country, is proud to endorse Senator Bernie Sanders for US President in the 2020 Primary Election, making UTLA the first teachers’ union in the country to endorse a presidential candidate.

Tonight, the UTLA House of Representatives – the elected leadership body of the 34,000-member union — voted 80% in favor of endorsing Sen. Sanders, capping the most comprehensive member engagement process that UTLA has ever conducted for a political candidate.

Thursday’s House vote followed a six-week discussion at school sites. Following that member engagement, on Wednesday at nine regional meetings, more than 500 elected site representatives voted 72.5% yes to the presidential endorsement of Sen. Bernie Sanders. Wednesday’s vote was opened up to allow any member who attended to vote alongside elected chapter leaders.

UTLA President Alex Caputo-Pearl said: “Why now, and why Bernie? Because we want him to win in the primary election and because we need an unapologetic, longstanding ally of progressive policies to make public education a priority in the White House. Sanders is the first viable major candidate in 25 years in the Democratic Party to stand up against privatization, the charter billionaires, and high-stakes testing and to stand up for a massive redistribution of wealth to schools and social services. Critically, like UTLA, Sen. Sanders believes in building a national movement for real, lasting change.”

Teachers are the number one profession among his donors for a reason: Sanders has the most comprehensive, progressive plan for public education among the candidates. His platform calls for a salary floor for public school teachers, tripling Title I federal education funding, boosting funding for special education (IDEA), and placing a moratorium on charter school growth. For the last several decades the unregulated growth of corporate charter schools has siphoned money from public schools, with little protection against fraud and little attention paid to equity or quality when it comes to educating students.

In addition to education issues, Sanders’ platform aligns with our values on a range of issues, including rebuilding the US labor movement and winning Medicare for All.

Bernie spoke at UTLA’s Leadership Conference in July, and he brought down the house with his defiant message about leading a movement for fundamental political and social change, including a strong, fully funded public education system. Sen. Sanders also signed a pledge to support Schools and Communities First and Our New Deal for Public Schools. He was the first major US politician to publicly support our 2019 strike, and he pushed for donations to our strike fund, leading to a cascade of influential support and an increase in the fund of more than $100,000.

LA educators are standing behind a candidate who has the electability to beat Trump. Sanders is leading in Democratic fundraising, is strong in swing states and among independent voters, beats Trump in head-to-head polls, and has major support in demographics that will vote heavily in 2020, including Latinx voters, Black women, and millennials. As the electorate becomes more diverse, defeating Trump will require a candidate who can motivate a diverse coalition of voters.

Sanders’ platform is not just a corrective to the destructive presidency of Donald Trump but also to failed policies of the past few decades that have starved public schools and left behind working-class and middle-class families while giving massive tax breaks to corporations and billionaires. Long-standing Democratic Party leaders have been a part of these problems.

“We must take the most anti-Trump stance that we can take,” said UTLA Vice President Gloria Martinez. “That includes endorsing Sen. Sanders. We see in Bernie the same fighting spirit that drove 60,000 people — teachers, students and parents — to the streets of LA in January during UTLA’s strike to invest in our students.”

The following is a timeline of UTLA’s endorsement.
  • Sept. 11 – UTLA Board of Directors votes 35-1 to begin exploring an endorsement process for Sen. Bernie Sanders.
  • Sept. 18 – UTLA House of Representatives votes 135-46 to confirm the process to explore endorsing Sanders.
  • Oct. 2 – School site leaders discuss and review endorsement materials.
  • Oct. 2-Nov. 12 — School site leaders engage members on consideration of a UTLA endorsement of Sen. Bernie Sanders.
  • Nov. 13— Membership advisory up or down vote at 9 regional area meetings. 72.5% of voters, representing more than 500 LAUSD schools, say yes to endorsing Sanders.
  • Nov. 14 — House of Representatives votes 80% to endorse Sen. Bernie Sanders.

NEWS: Bernie 2020 Rolls Out Massive List of Endorsements from Across the Country

WASHINGTON - In just the last week, Bernie 2020 announced endorsements from one hundred elected officials, activists, and community leaders from across the country, including in California, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and South Carolina, among others.

The endorsements follow a rally and endorsement from Rep. Rashida Tlaib yesterday in Detroit, as well as endorsements from Reps Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar. The endorsements represent a diverse slate local leaders and progressive elected officials and show the strength of Sanders movement in communities across the country.

“From Rhode Island to California progressive leaders are getting behind Bernie Sanders’ campaign for president, because they know he is the only candidate running who has the guts to take on the corporate elites and the billionaire class,” said Faiz Shakir, Bernie 2020 Campaign Manager. “We are proud to have the support of so many progressive leaders. This is a growing movement, driven by both justice and compassion, that will defeat Trump and transform America.”

Endorsements include Iowa’s Linn County Supervisor Stacey Walker and New Hampshire's Nashua Alderwoman-at-Large Shoshanna Kelly, a rising star in New Hampshire Democratic Party, and first person of color elected to her office in Nashua, as well as multiple mayors in California including Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguin and San Luis Obispo Mayor Bruce Delgado.
